This book was very odd and bizarre, I didn't care for it that much, but it did have a purpose in a way, just barely.
Throughout the book, we see a very strange society. We find it completely absurd and wrong in our views but to them, that's the normal. Naturally we want to see someone rise up to the New World and shut it down. In this book, we don't have such a person. We have people who grow uncomfortable with it but never actually do anything about it. They just end up dying and the Society continues on.
Our world and the Brave New world are similar in some aspects. Our sense of morality when it comes to sexual interactions has decreased plenty over the years, and it is starting to slip more towards the World State's standards every year. We however, are not close to cloning and developing humans like seen in the World State. People in our world do like to take drugs to make themselves feel better, however, we do not have drugs like the Soma that was used inside the novel. Our world is similar to the Brave New World, but just Barely!
The ending on the book was very disappointing. We see John begin to go insane, he is trying to live in a world where his knowledge is not understandable and all he knows is shakespeare. Going only off of Shakespeare causes John to think differently and be over dramatic. His constant self whipping is fairly odd and everyone seems to enjoy it, based on that I think we see the savage side of the World State. The World State Themselves brought John to his own death.
Bernard, now being popular due to him bringing John the savage to the World State, is not becoming a different person. Everything that made him who he was in the beginning of the book is gone and he longer feels out of place. He is now bragging about his own sex life to people and is participating in the standard Rituals that the World State normally does without question. He tries to brag to Helmholtz but is not looked on how he wanted to be looked on so he declared to never talk to him again. I feel that Bernard will possibly become an antagonist at this point as he is now enjoying the society that he wasn't didn't like.
In chapter 7, we see Bernard and Lenina Visit a "savage" group of people. We meet an old woman who used to be with the director. She got pregnant and then was forced to live inside the reservation. Some say she was walking alone and fell, but I say she was pushed by Tom and left her because she was pregnant. I don't see this community of savages playing a huge role in the book themselves, but their idea might play a big role.
In chapter 6, we see Bernard get in trouble with the director. His self awareness to himself about not fitting could end up getting him exiled to greenland. Bernard also gives in to trying Soma. I believe that it is a good possibility that Bernard will get exiled due to his thinking. He is going to take it too far and end up getting kicked out. I wonder if Bernard, even exiled, will try to change the society for the better.
We finally see Bernard's character develop as we ready the fourth chapter. Bernard sees himself as a misfit because he isn't up to par with the others in his caste. He is smaller than the others and in their caste systems, they physically look down on the lower caste's and Bernard is shorter than his fellow caste mates so he feels like he is being looked down on. I predict that Bernard will play a key role in the book's future and he could be one to start something that could end this society.
The first chapter of this book was very interesting. We were taken on a presentation of this man's work of creating humans to their specifications. They would grow embryos and modify them to fit certain roles in the community. They would limit the amount of oxygen one would have to make them less intelligent, while others would be made to be more intellectual. I find this very interesting and would like to point out it seems very similar to Star Wars's Kamino Cloning process from the movies.
